Consistency generally matters more than occasional all-out sessions. If you are starting again, choose an amount that feels manageable and build gradually.

  • Work toward moderate aerobic activity on several days of the week, adjusting the duration and intensity to your abilities.

Dopamine and oxytocin: achievement versus connection

Dopamine and oxytocin contribute to well-being in different ways. Dopamine is closely linked with reward and progress, so a structured plan, a completed session, or a small performance goal can help maintain motivation. Oxytocin is more closely associated with closeness and social safety, so supportive exercise settings may make movement feel more enjoyable and sustainable.

These benefits can work together. A person might use a training plan to create a sense of progress while also exercising with a friend for encouragement and connection. The most effective routine is often one that includes both personal goals and activities you genuinely enjoy.

Make the mood benefits sustainable

Start with realistic commitments, such as three manageable sessions per week, and increase variety only when the routine feels established. Prepare clothing in advance, schedule exercise at a reliable time, or pair it with music or another enjoyable activity. Recovery matters too: inadequate rest can make exercise feel harder and reduce motivation.

Exercise can support mental well-being, but it is not a substitute for professional care when depression, anxiety, persistent low mood, or other symptoms are interfering with daily life. If exercise causes pain, dizziness, or unusual symptoms, stop and seek appropriate medical guidance. A regular mix of enjoyable movement, recovery, and social support can provide a practical foundation for feeling better—without needing to find one single chemical responsible for happiness.
